Plastic pollution in Malaysia. The country had enough!

Plastic pollution in Malaysia. The country had enough! 29 Jun

Plastic pollution is among the greatest world problems and is getting bigger with each day. In early 2018 China banned imports of plastic waste, since then Malaysia has become the world’s No1 unwanted plastic importer.

The country is covered in 19,000 tons of plastic. Malaysian government will return part of the contaminated plastic waste back to the countries  they imported it from, because they refuse to become the world’s trash dumping ground. Yeo Bee Yin Malaysian politician from the Democratic Action Party, Minister of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change said: “Malaysia will not be a dumping ground to the world … we will fight back. All Canadian companies are required to comply with the law and any violations will lead to legal penalties. Canadian officials have reached out to Malaysia to gather more information,” she added.

Even though they are a small country, they don’t want to be bullied. The plastic was imported illegally. Nine shipping containers were found to contain non-recyclable waste: plastic, a mixture of e-waste and household rubbish. Yeo is warning the US, UK, Canada, Japan, China, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh, Netherlands and Singapore to expect waste to be returned. Illegal factories have been discovered by the government. In total the factories found were 97. Some of them were immediately shut down. The government said that soon more factories will be shut down. Licensed factories will also be scrutinized while a temporary ban on the import of plastic waste remains. Basically, the government’s ability to take action is being tested by these operations. But what if this is not enough?

Plastic pollution should be taken care of as soon as possible before we start swimming in plastic. The sad part is that the human population is destroying their own home and the home of many innocent animals. Hopefully people will start taking actions soon and will find a proper eco-friendly alternative to plastic disposal and will reduce the production of plastic products to a minimum. Just because it is cheaper to use plastic, it doesn’t mean that we have to keep producing it and irreversibly damage our planet. In my opinion every country should have its own means to recycle plastic before considering importing it to other countries and each person needs to reduce its use in their everyday lives.

Our company Rubbish Experts is eco-orientated. We recycle 98% of the waste we collect. Because for us the health of our planet is of greatest importance.  We think that this thought should be in everyone’s mind when buying anything made of plastic. We do support different environmentally safe projects and try to be a part of them as much as we can. If we can lower the plastic waste we will have a chance for a better future for us and our planet. Let’s stop this together!
